It's hard to believe that just over two weeks ago I was vacationing right in the middle of Hurricane Jimena. It was a great adventure as the hurricane veered west past us causing only high winds, rain and a day of doing nothing. Under the umbrella of be careful what you ask for, I had asked for a quiet, relaxing time out and found that there is nothing to do during a hurricane except relax, watch the wind, rain and waves trusting the ocean will tame itself sooner than later.
While in Los Cabos, Mexico, I was on the receiving end of a well worn time share sales pitch. I almost felt sorry for the "closer" as I listened in amazement as he made mistake after basic sales mistake.
It reminded me to never lose site of these 5 sales basics
- Timing is everything - Where is your timing off when selling? Are you listening or just pitching your agenda? Trying to sell a time share when a hurricane is approaching boarders on the ridiculous.
- Time Agreements - Can your prospect trust your word? Making and keeping time agreements is a simple way to build trust.
- Go for the "no" - When you hear a clear, clean "no" then move on.
- No emotional connection, no deal - Except for commodity sales, a transaction of money results when there is a relationship that satisfies a need, want or desire.
- Discounting to get the deal - Do you use discounting when all else fails? If you have been taught to keep sweetening the deal, does it work or does the prospects' wonder what the real price might be if they held out a bit longer.
